FIDO Authenticator Certification

The Fast Identification Online (FIDO) Alliance has created specifications and requirements for secure authentication to remove the need for passwords.

The Fast Identification Online (FIDO) Alliance has created specifications and requirements for secure authentication to remove the need for passwords.

The FIDO Authenticator Certification Program is designed to ensure security of enhanced authentication experiences. The FIDO specification allows for either a passwordless user experience through a Universal Authentication Framework (UAF) protocol, or a simplified password experience through a Universal Second Factor (U2F) protocol.

How Does UL Help?

UL has worked closely with the FIDO Alliance to develop the FIDO Authenticator Security Requirements.  As a key contributor, UL has an expert understanding of both the security requirements and FIDO protocols.

UL is accredited by the FIDO Alliance to perform Level 2 Authenticator Security Evaluations; the highest level currently available. UL’s security experts evaluate the authenticator’s security characteristics for compliance with FIDO requirements. Our extensive experience performing security evaluations within the FIPS 140, Common Criteria, EMVCo, and PCI PTS programs mean we can efficiently move your FIDO Authenticator product through the testing process.

In addition, UL offers requirement workshops and pre-assessments to help vendors understand the security requirements and answer any specific questions prior to the start of the formal evaluation.
